Once upon a time, rural communities thrived on their own, making the best use of local resources.... Up and until globalisation happened 🤬 Globalisation meant external supplies such as fuel-based energy became critical for local rural communities to operate "modern technologies", creating a toxic dependency. This dependency link must be severed & Sustainability practices are an autonomy enabler. By implementing local energy production through solar or other renewable technique, local communities will not only become self-sufficient and will be able to re-invest the "newly free cashflow" towards their pressing needs.

The use of non-renewable energy sources poses two key problems: the depletion of natural resources and greenhouse gas emissions contributing to climate change. Depending on location and the community we are in discussion there is many project out there which have already done point 1. For example Natural biogass project. Government should also start reviewing the red tape and working with company and community in obtaining energy such as methane gas capture and firing for electricity. Red tape will reduce the ability of this.

I think more and more companies should focus on achieving water neutrality as it is the need of the hour. In the water scarce areas where farmer is able to take only one crop in a year, water conservation measures from big companies will help the farmers to take at least two crops in a year by means of constructing lakes and rain water recharging for increasing ground water levels

I have worked in the rural communities of Himalayas in India and the traditional water management systems are as sustainable as it can be. Often rural communities who are aligned and intertwined with natural resources have already sustainable water management systems in place but due to unmindful 'development' these systems get defunct. There are many initiatives in India that are reviving these water management systems and doing major forest restorations are extremely important in certain areas for water conservation.

I did a desktop study on a community in the Wheatbelt of Australia that relies on wheat. The community is experiencing population loss as they move to find jobs, education, etc. The agricultural spaces decrease species diversity (such as the black cockatoo) and cause environmental destruction. Investing in native perennial grains as a replacement for wheat provides an economic benefit and fosters sustainable agriculture practices. Which retains the knowledge class inclined to study and invest in these practices. Indigenous Australians can foster land management strategies. Which creates jobs, strengthens the community, creates economic growth, heals biodiversity, reduces water usage, and contributes to food sovereignty and food security.

Soil health, improving carbon and productivity have been part of the projects I have led for the past 10 years. Another important part, which was highly successful was the indigenous seeds programme and indigenous diet. monoculture have put at risk communities. The revival of ancient practices and diets, lost during the colonization years, have gone a long way to support food security and sovereignty.

You need to assess the needs of the community. Apart from water, seeds and energy needs, storage is key and sustainable ways of conserving food is critical since from my experience a good 30% of harvest, in critical areas. Expensive chemicals are not always available. We have supported local solutions, using air tight containers to preserve harvest and cut losses almost to zero. Another sustainable choice and that can improve drammatically livelihoods in communities.

Other important considerations are Providing rural communities with access to experts in agriculture, environmental science, and sustainable development who can offer guidance, technical support, and resources to help farmers transition to more sustainable practices. As well as increasing market access; we need to create open opportunities for people to access rural producers and to access markets for sustainably produced foods, such as farmers' markets, farm-to-table programs, and partnerships with local restaurants, schools, and institutions.

I would like to add that biodiversity protection and proper soil management are crucial topics to consider when thinking about sustainability practices in rural areas. Assuming that there is a lot of unsealed space available, it is important to think about a holistic planning for those areas that has soil quality and biodiversity (as eg number of native species per hectar) as a priority. Connecting this to the thought of a circular/C2C economy, one could even make a phosphorus management plan and research how far the excrements of the community (both human and non-human) can be used to contribute to a good soil management.

One thing I’ve found more constructive is the implementation of Sustainable agriculture practices and agro-forestry projects. With the reduction in the usage of water consumption and promoting sustainable food production can enhance the crop yield and help community in generating livelihood practices in this domain.

In this setting, there are some historically disadvantaged populations that are at risk of not being able to access resources the community has to offer, due to lack of mobility. Thinking about equitable access to sustainable transportation for all will be key in facilitating the success of a rural community’s ability to thrive.

Before anything it is advisable to seek a dialogue with community stakeholders. What do they really need? For example, it is laudable to build physical infrastructure like roads or schools, but managing it - and staffing schools - is just as important.
