In an ideal world, some amount of buffer is always provisioned at the end of every project activity at the time of timeline planning to accommodate the eventualities. If not, then the project has a chance to run into risk. In that case, mitigation steps could be as follows - (a) Identify the project critical path (priority 1) (b) Group the project activities into Dependent and In-dependent category (with short and long lead time) (c) Reassessment of resource requirement based on critical path and grouping of the activities (d) Redeploy resources based on priorities (e) Add resources if needed or train resources to avoid addition In parallel, investigate and uproot the problems causing delay in project to avoid its recurrence.

When I notice a missed SLA, I see it as a symptom of either lack of skill-will or as a process failure! Hence step 1 is always about finding the root cause, and ensure there is a psychological safety that the issue will be addressed and it's not the individual that will be taken to task. Next is an immediate fix of the issue in hand, if required temporarily redistribute critical tasks to high performers. If process issue, implement the CAPA for future such instances. If person, then sit with the individual clarify expectations, understand challenges, align KPI's, and if needed initiate a PIP with daily or weekly goals, provide real-time feedback and monitor progress closely. Take decisive actions only if no improvement is observed!

This is such a vague question. What deadlines are we talking about, is the issue on the critical path, what are the dependencies, how important really is this miss? You must absolutely consider whether there is any real impact on your customers business…if yes, then get lighting fires, fess up and fix it!

Absolutely! Whenever you work on projects that are timeline oriented, it is necessary as a precaution to ensure that there is a time tracker in place and process placeholder to track the progress. However, in case of situations where we miss the deadline, it is imperative that we analyze the root cause of the issue to avoid it in the future. Adding to it, proactively identifying if the roots can cause more damage to the deadlines and mitigate them would be the ideal way to proceed further. Also, don’t forget it is important that things are effectively communicated to the internal and external stakeholders about the miss.
