When coachees in a group clash over their goals, I start by getting everyone to lay their cards on the table—what do they really want and why? It’s about hearing each voice clearly. Then, I highlight any common threads, even if they seem tiny at first. From there, I guide the group in exploring how these different ambitions can work together. Sometimes it means compromising on timelines or finding a shared objective that still allows for individual wins. Keeping the conversation honest, focused, and respectful helps transform friction into forward momentum. “Turn the tug-of-war into a team huddle, and watch the magic happen.”

When clients in a group coaching session have conflicting goals, the key to navigating this challenge effectively is to first identify their shared values and overarching objectives. By highlighting these commonalities, I can foster a sense of unity and collaboration within the group. I encourage open dialogue where each participant shares their goals, allowing everyone to understand the perspectives and priorities of others. Once the group’s shared values and aspirations are clarified, I develop individualized action plans tailored to each clients specific needs and objectives. These plans should align with the broader goals of the group while respecting the unique paths of each participant.

If the goals are different maybe the topic of the group session was nit defined narrowly enough. Options: 1. You can split the session in 2 2. You can pin it and address it in a 1:1 session. 3. You can choose the topic, and the steps and questions you will pose… maybe have some exercises. Coachees will have their own answers and take aways from it… they will be different and that’s ok. That’s the point of coaching to reveal personal things through questions and so on.

I focus on their common goals: success, effectiveness, growth, clarity, etc. Regardless of specific goals, these common goals are the driving force. I have each person define what these mean to them and what their desired outcome is. We discuss their perceived roadblocks and challenges and how it affects their work. In these expressions, some common experience can be found. Creating trust in the group comes from learning how to express differences without criticism. Everyone is treated and encouraged equally. They usually learn a lot from each other.
