While it can happen, typically feedback that results in a major shift comes from a breakdown in communication. So, before you do anything, I’d evaluate your lines of communication. That will be critical since one of the most important things to do in managing expectations is making sure you’re listening and understanding what exactly needs to change and why. By asking good questions and understanding what’s happening, you may discover it’s not as dramatic of a shift as it initially presents. Even if it is dramatic, good communication will allow you to talk through a mutual plan to get back on track.

It's essential to balance flexibility with maintaining the integrity of your expertise. First, assess if the change is truly in their best interest rather than simply “making the client happy.” As the expert, it’s your job to communicate the risks/vulnerabilities this could create. Sometimes, you must stand your ground and explain why their request may not align with the outcomes they expect. While you must be willing to adjust to client requirements, never at the expense of the integrity of your work. This may mean having the courage to let a client walk away if their needs go against the value you bring. At the end of the day, it’s all about communication. Be clear, be honest, and show your client why they hired you in the first place.
