The accompanying information with the photo by George Stienmetz of Crobis says, in part,: "Cave explorers have been dropping into Alabama's Neversink Pit for years. Its limestone walls reach 162 feet to the bottom and are covered in lush ferns, including some rare and endangered species, lending the open-air pit a jungle-like atmosphere. Since 1995, Neversink Pit has been owned and maintained by the Southeastern Cave Conservancy, a nonprofit organization that works to protect caves in the southeastern United States."
In 2014, I interviewed Amy Hinkle, a Huntsville photographer who captured images of the pit when it was coated in ice. Click here to read a Q&A.

The Southeastern Cave Conservancy urges explorers to take care to preserve the area when visiting. On its webpage, SCC writes: "Neversink is a beautiful 162 foot open air pit in Jackson County Alabama. Long known and loved by cave explorers, the cave is considered by many to be the classic pit. It is probably the most photographed pit in TAG (Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia) due to the beautiful fern covered ledges (including some rare and endangered ferns), waterfalls, and other features."
