1 Dead and 9 Others Hospitalized in Maryland ‘Mass Shooting’

Police also found a vehicle in flames when they arrived at the scene on Tuesday, Dec. 17, according to a report

A “mass shooting" in the Towson area of Baltimore County, Maryland, has left one dead and nine others hospitalized.

Baltimore County Police Department confirmed in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that the incident took place on Tuesday, Dec. 17, shortly before 7:15 p.m. local time.

Authorities responded to the 8500 block area of Loch Raven Boulevard in Towson following multiple reports of a shooting. 

The police said they were considering the incident a “mass shooting" and those injured were "transported to area hospitals."

"When officers arrived, they found a vehicle on its side and in flames," Baltimore County Police Chief Robert McCullough said during a press conference, per ABC News. "Multiple victims were discovered, and the fire department was alerted to provide assistance."

McCullough added that while the incident "appears to be intentional" and they "believe the individuals knew each other,” there was "no ongoing threat to the public.”

"There appears to be some type of incident that led to the vehicle crashing and catching on fire," McCullough said, per NBC Connecticut. "Investigators are looking into the circumstances leading up to that."   

ABC reported that the Baltimore Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) were also in attendance along with Johnny Olszewski, Baltimore County Executive. Olszewski called the event a shocking tragedy, per the outlet.

"I am on the scene with Baltimore County Police and Fire Chiefs. We will provide any and all resources needed in the wake of this horrific incident,” he posted on X.

“This is an incident that is shocking, particularly for those of us in Baltimore County,” Olszewski also said, according to NBC Connecticut. “These types of incidents are really unheard of here, so it really shocks the conscience.”

Baltimore County Police Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for additional information.
